DISCOVERY — - Took this from the intersection of Sierra HW and Ave N due West of AF 42 on June 30+- a few days in 1996. Just found it while clearing up my once-I-retire pile...Take with an 80mm zoom lens onto 35mm film. did the math: 530 feet above me.

... they took off at around 0730, ( All the cars on Ave N stopped in place and everyone with long lenses and shoulder-mounted VHS recorders bailed out and starting shooting...) and literally staggered into the air - gear up very fast, then VERY SLOW climb, no turns, off to the West above Palmdale and Quartz Hill. I really didn't think he was going to make it. I'll have some more of that day later.
