Airbus A319 (N312NV) - The windsock gives a very good indication of what these Allegiant pilots were up against as this pic shows the first of three separate "touchdowns" of the main gear on AAY's N312NV as the pilots battle crosswind wind gusts that sometimes exceeded 65 MPH while they make their second attempt to get their Airbus down on 34L. This first "contact" came when the Bus was already 4000 feet down the 11,000 foot long Runway 34L (the "4" marker is visible in the background behind the left tires) and as seen here, it was a hard touch on to the left mains. The Airbus rebounded into the air and the next touchdown was another hard contact but it was the reverse of this scene with the left wing high and the right mains taking all the weight. The Airbus rebounded back into the air yet again and came down back on the left main tires for a third smoking touchdown. But the third touchdown worked -- the pilots got the right mains down on the concrete and then used every method to shut down their aircraft as it approached the 2000 foot marker.br /This was the AAY's second landing attempt. The first attempt became a missed approach when the pilots received wind sheer alerts while experiencing gains and losses of 30 while still a couple of miles out. The very high winds, which had been blowing directly out of the south during the morning and noon hours, had shifted and were coming from the west and blowing across the airport by the time this AAY arrived from Las V.

Earlier in the morning, I saw a sight that was a "first" for me. A Southwest flight, already over 16R and flaring to touch down, suddenly seemed to shudder. The jet was only 50 feet or so off the runway when the pilots slammed the throttles to full takeoff power, declared a "missed approach," and headed for the sky. The wheels were going back into the wells before the jet was even 200 feet up. The pilots reported to the tower that they had encountered a wind sheer right over the runway and fought their plane back into the air. (I do know there had been an extremely violent blast of wind - I was almost shoved right off the roof I was on.) The flight diverted to Oakland (another SW diverted to SMF), and it was the last Southwest aircraft to come to Reno during the remaining six hours I was at the airport. But Southwest was not the only airline that diverted flights. Later in the morning, a Volaris arriving from Mexico declared a miss and immediately diverted to San Jose.
The winds were the strongest I have ever personally encountered at RNO. I had arrived at RNO at 5:30 AM and stayed until 4 PM. When I got home around dinnertime, my wife commented on my badly windburned face.

Great shot and perspective Gary! Those crosswinds can be quite challenging for landings! All 5!

Epic Gman__ wow, Ive been out there( Not RNO) but other airports where wind was a huge factor and my hat goes off on the Pilots who have the talent to get the jet on the runway. Great photo here and like Darryl says: " All 5..."
