"Dreadnought"
..................................
"Dreadnought" (Race 8) is captured here taking off to make a practice run that it will not complete. As everyone who was at the airport observed, "Dreadnought's" thundering Pratt & Whitney power plant failed in almost this same location (near the Start/Finish Pylon) shortly after this pic was snapped as it was traveling at around 440 MPH, and the pilot was forced to make a superb dead stick emergency landing on RTS's Runway 14.
Comments
Very unfortunately, "Dreadnought's" racing days in the Reno Air Races are over. The engine cannot be repaired in time for Race 8 to participate in the Final Flag event now taking place at Reno Stead, and as of this Sunday, the 59 year old history of the Reno Air Races will come to an end. "Dreadnought" WILL fly again, but never again at the Reno Air Races.
Good shot. It did sound bad whatever failed. Looks like Steven Hinton will collect one more, and the final checkered flag this Sunday as long as his horse holds up. But you never know, Miss A will probably be not too far behind now that Dreadnought is out.
Tom ... Miss A is a fave of mine. I already had many snaps of it but then the other day they came past me towing her out of the pits so I followed a few feet back and got some shots as she joined the others on the apron prior to start up. I'm rooting for her but Bardahl is going to be da_n difficult to beat.
OMG you got Dreadnought! 20x*......Ive been following Aerial Visuals site and I thought Race 8 would surely win....but no
Cool shot Gary! Love this!
