If this had involved the German team depicted as wearing Lederhosen or the Dutch team depicted as wearing wooden clogs, or the symbols had been a beer stein or cheese wheel, nobody in those countries would have been bent out of shape over it.

They'd have been upset over being eliminated from the World Cup, but they would have understood that no malice was intended.
