Airbus’ A321 Receives an Awakening In The U.S.

Submitted
Having entered service in 1994, the Airbus A321 is certainly not a new aircraft. It has long been a top seller in Europe thanks to its improved fuel burn and operating costs. The 757-200 is more capable from a payload-range perspective, but on an operating basis, the A321 is roughly 20% cheaper to operate. However, despite its advantages, the A321 has never really taken hold in the US, until now. (airchive.com) More...

So how are the batteries?

The batteries are nickel-cadmium that weigh twice as much, and being from Europe replacement costs are double what others are paying. The A321 flies lower and slower in part because bleed air is used for many functions that are more efficiently done with electricity. I invite your attention to the Dreamliner that is already exceeding expectations of operators and passengers alike. It uses technology that is paving the way to the future.

This tome is so loaded with PR speak I bet EADS wrote it. The reason American carriers avoided the A321 for 20 years was because it flew lower, slower, has less payload, restricted operational abilities (high and hot airfields),and cost more overall than other airplanes. American carriers did not receive the preferential treatment EU carriers enjoyed when it came time to pay. Five years with no payments? I am hoping for that that deal on my next Mercedes-Benz.

This stands out as a baloney sandwich without benefit of mustard:

"Seating 190 passengers versus 150 in the A320 with similar overall trip costs, the standard A321s offer JetBlue 15% lower CASM versus the main fleet of A320s."

40 more people has similar costs and lowers CASM 15%? I suppose if government pays your financing costs and carries the principal for half a decade. Jet Blue will not see President Obama offering that largess.

It's just simple mathematics that is not unique to the A321.

A slightly larger plane with similar characteristics will cost a bit more to operate. But the total cost is brkng divided over a greater number of paying passengers.

So it would not be unusual for a larger variant of any particular plane family to have average seat costs that would be lower than smaller variants.

190 pax in the A321 = can opener to get into your seat.
