Sounds like the classic stall/spin in an attempt to do the 180+ back to the airport with not enough altitude/energy and too much of a bank. Hard decisions to make when it happen so fast and you have little time to react. I wonder what the ground features were straight ahead of a few degrees either way? Something to always look into via live ground visit or google earth if you can.
