Sometimes it is worth it to act on the side of caution. Flying is one of those times.

How many more flights do we have today vs 20 years ago? Has any of our rules for flying in weather changed over the years to make it more safe than in the past by weather cancelling of flights? Of the cancelled flights was there any limit on number of passengers?

I was flying home from Pittsburgh about three weeks ago. After the plane was boarded and pretty much ready to go, we were informed of an Alleghany County rule that says no workers allowed on ramp if lightning is within 10 miles. No one to marshal the aircraft out of the gate area, so we sat almost two hours. I didn't see any lightning from my window seat. Missed my connection. I appreciate the safety concern for the airport workers, but unless the storm is moving toward the airport, 10 miles seems excessive. There was no mention of concern regarding flying conditions.

Thanks for that. I think it proves my point. The rules have tightened drastically and the # of flights have also increased. Those 2 items alone skew the flights delayed to look far worse.
Unless of course you were on one of those flights lol.
