This one was built in 1949, so it didn't participate in D-Day. Was it ever owned by Pan Am?
The following post that this a/c was built in 1949, is incorrect. According to the archives of the current owner; Historical Flight Foundation (HFF):"This Douglas DC-3 began life as a C-47 in 1944. It was the 100th C-47 delivered to the China National Aviation Corporation, in August 1944, piloted by Peter Goutiere, from Miami to Kolkata, India in 90 hours of flying over 14 days." While it did not participate in D-Day, it did duty flying the Burma Hump during WWII. This a/c is participating in the 75th D-Day Anniversary because the father of the HFF founder; John Sessions, was a D-Day paratrooper!!!
Today, the plane is painted in vintage 1949 Pan American Airways colors to recognize its service at that time for CNAC, a partnership between Pan Am and the Chinese government.
The milestone 75th anniversary of D-Day is coming up on June 6. Pilots from the Pacific Northwest aboard a historic plane have arrived in the United Kingdom to take part in a reenactment of the invasion of Normandy.
After wowing veterans and heads of state on the ground below in France, the plane and its Northwest crew will fly onward to Germany to participate in Berlin Airlift commemorations. The double-dose of 20th century history has meaning for crew members, most of whom weren't born yet when it happened.
