I never could understand why the rear wheels are only single tyres, even though the engines and a lot of the heavy airframe structure are directly above them, but the forward landing gear is dual?

No doubt the front gear wheels are the main weight bearing set when lifting off and landing... i.e. - the aft fuselage lifts first and sets down last.
