A take off from 34R is not an unheard of departure; aircraft leaving RNO take off on both of the 34s frequently. However, 34R is the shorter of the parallels so the vast majority of the time the NevANG and visiting Hercs use 34L when departing to the north, and that is what made this liftoff from 34R a bit of a rarity.

Gary... a very nice photo of a Herky Bird climbing out after takeoff!

Joe Baugher has some information on this particular C-130H as you've captured with your camera...

"93-7312 (MSN 382-5377) named 'Spirit of Sumit 38' with 731st Airlift Squadron, 302nd Airlift Wing in Jul 1996 in memory of C-130E 62-1838 which crashed on May 13, 1995. Recently active with 169th ALS, 182nd ALW of Illinois ANG at Peoria ANG Base, Illinois".*

*I've edited Joe's text to correct one minor "typo" - substituted "," for "<" as trailed "ALS" for reading clarity.

In honor of their ultimate sacrifice and in memory of those brave U.S.A.F. aircrew who flew on the original "Sumit 38" from Peterson AFB, here's Joe's entry on that C-130E Hercules...

"62-1838 (MSN 382-3801, 731th TAS) crashed near Bliss, Idaho May 13, 1995 due to engine fire. All 6 onboard killed."

Hi, Cliff. Just now got home (7:15 PM) from a very long and super busy day of photo-snapping, and I just read your post. Very informative, and I thank you for providing this detailed background of this Herc. It is a nice honor to the crew of "Sumit 38."
