Lockheed C-130 Hercules (79-0480) - Sometimes a quiet afternoon at an airport suddenly becomes rather hectic, and that was the case on this day. This NevANG "High Rollers" Hercules (79-0480) made a hasty return to Reno Tahoe International after shutting down the left inboard, seen in this picture feathered as the C130 hustles off of runway 16R to clear the way for a diverted SkyWest CRJ on short final to the same runway. Both aircraft landed safely and did not required FD assistance; however, the CRJ was met by airport police when it arrived at a gate.

The Hercs are tough old birds, but I'd be interested to know how many hours of maintenance they require after each sortie. I've seen them land with a feathered prop like this one quite often or sometimes with emergency equipment standing by quite often due to hydraulic problems, so I'm just curious as to the ratio of maintenance hours per flight time hour? Anyone know?

Any rumors about the "High Rollers" getting some "J" models?
Paul Wisgerhof
In 2013 the cost per flight hour is given here: http://nation.time.com/2013/04/02/costly-flight-hours/ Everything else about the C-130 is here. http://fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/c-130.htm They estimate 20 man hours of maintenance per flight hour.

Paul >> Geesh! Twenty per flight hour? Even if the estimate isn't exact and might be less than 20 to 1, the number still astonishes me. Thank you for the reply ... and ... thank you for the links. I appreciate your response very much. (Wave)
China...51 >> The newest acquisitions (as far as I know right now) are H-3s. I haven't seen any Js on their ramp. There HAVE been a couple visiting Js but those were parked on Atlantic's ramp. There is a fella around here who knows "what's here, what's leaving, and what's coming" but I don't see him often so I have to go by what I see over there. If I see or hear any news about Js being added to the Rollers fleet, I'll pass it along first opportunity. (Thumbs Up)

Excellent shot and catch, Gary!
