Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress (N3701G)
Flashback to 2017 ~~
"Madras Maiden,' a B-17G (N3701G, previously "Chuckie," repainted and renamed in 2019 - now currently named "Ye Olde Pub") as it was on approach to KRNO's 16L.
Modified to a B-17F and renamed "Ye Olde Pub" two years after this pic was taken, N3701G now resembles the bomber that is known for its encounter with a German fighter in the skies over Europe.
** NOTE: Read the book "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos to learn the true story of a German fighter pilot who encountered the severely damaged and crippled "Ye Olde Pub" and made the decision to escort the bomber to safety instead of shooting it down. **

I'm hoping N3701G makes a return visit here someday. I'd enjoy getting a click of it painted as "Ye Olde Pub" because I believe it serves as a fine honor to the courageous crew of the bomber AND also to the equally courageous pilot of the German fighter plane who would have almost certainly been executed by the Nazi High Command if its leaders had ever become aware of the action he performed that day.
It is great to see that some memories of what happened in the past are still being remembered and hot hidden. I hope I get a chance to see "Ye Olde Pub" and congratulate the people that keep that story alive.
I read "A Higher Call," and gave many copies away as gifts. Incredible story that almost didn't get told. I flew in "Sentimental Journey" B-17 last weekend. LOVED IT! Would like to see "Ye Olde Pub," too, if given the chance. Thanks for this post.
Alan & Michael .... My thanks to both of you for your comments. (@ Michael >> Also, another Thanks for IDing the book's correct title. I had added an "ing" to the word "Call." I've made the appropriate correction above.) I hope both of you do indeed get the opportunity to see "Ye Olde Pub" because I feel, as each of you probably do, that the paint now on N3701G represents a moment of true humanity in the midst of a time in history when displays of humanity were not very frequent.
A Classic Gman!............continual 5x
