BOEING 747SP (N747NA)
NASA's Boeing 747SP N747NA the Stratospheric Observatory For Infra-red Astronomy (SOFIA), in the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility at Air Force Plant 42 on April 8, 2009. SOFIA carries a 2.5 meter diameter telescope above most of the water vapor in the atmosphere to provide a clear view of space.
Comments
SOFIA shares this home with NASA's DC-8 atmospheric research aircraft, as well as their converted U-2s, and some others. The hangar was big enough that in a past life, after being the assembly building for the B-1, it was used to film parts of the movie "The Terminal" with Tom Hanks.
